Vacancy – Caretaker, 30 Hours Per Week

An opportunity has arisen to join our small but dedicated team here at Townhead Village Hall – the heart of the Townhead community. The post is for 30 hours per week, and pay is £17,846 per year (pay rise pending). Annual leave is 20 days per year, on top of 8 days public holiday, and there is a pension scheme. A casual style uniform is also provided.

You will need to be flexible in terms of working your hours, and be able to adapt to a range of duties. The job entails some lifting and other physical tasks. Cash handling is also involved, as is giving some support to reception and the kitchen. Dealing with members of the public means that you need to be polite and professional. This post would be ideal for someone with experience working in a community based organisation, or who has done caretaking, or perhaps with some customer service or security experience. However, we are aware that people without experience in these areas, might still have transferable skills or experience to offer.  We also welcome such applications. Job description
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES This is a post requiring flexibility. As a TVH caretaker you are a member of a small but dedicated team who are highly trusted. you will be a key holder, responsible for the security, maintenance and cleaning of the building and grounds. cash handling and some reception duties are also required in addition to those listed below. * Undertake cleaning, tidying and general janitorial type functions within the main building and external adjacent areas belonging to TVH * Set-up seating, tables and other furniture and equipment for events and hires, and put it away after the event * Lock-up and secure the facilities, and open them for public and other use * Fulfil basic security functions as required, assisted by CCTV monitoring * Support the operations of reception, kitchen and other parts of TVH as required * Watch out for the safety of users, identify and report timeously any threats, hazards, or safety concerns * Deal with enquiries and users in a polite manner, taking any messages and imparting required information * Attend to notices and displays * Generally support a welcoming and inclusive environment, being mindful especially of the cleanliness and appearance of the facilities * Monitor the use of the facilities and equipment, assisting the manager with regular equipment audits, and helping to prevent abuse of the building and contents * Deal with certain loads, which will require lifting, shifting, and receiving deliveries which will also include checking paperwork and inspecting contents * Undertake training paid for by TVH as required * Assist users arriving at, and leaving the premises, which includes operation of an electronic tollbar (training will be given) * Mow the grass in the garden and grass areas, remove litter, and undertake non-specialist garden support tasks * Assist in simple stewarding and monitoring as required * Report to the manager and follow instructions including schedules set by them * Supervise those providing services to TVH, such as tradespeople * Behave and conduct yourself in a professional manner being mindful of TVH’s commitment to being an inclusive and safe environment for all * Undertake any other task or duty not listed above, but which might reasonably be considered as from time-to-time falling within the remit of a caretaker.

Desirable

  • Experience working in a community setting, or in a caretaking or similar role, or in customer service, or security, or some other relevant area, either paid or voluntary – keenness to learn is also valued

Important Note: We will not bring the closing date forward. But it may be necessary to otherwise make alterations to the above given dates. Delays in documentation being provided to us, can cause more substantial delays.

NOTE ON REFEREES ETC

Any job offer made, is subject to adequate references and any other required documentation being provided within a reasonable timescale. A job offer may be revoked if such is not forthcoming.

You are asked to provide two references. These can be included in your cv/resume, or given in your brief covering letter. If you have been in prior employment, we would normally expect that one of these is a former employer, and in all cases, the second should be a character reference. If you have not been in prior employment, or do not wish to give a former employer as a reference, then we can accept anyone who knows you in a volunteering capacity. Failing that, you can use anyone who can vouch for you in any sort of performance capacity.  Your character reference should be someone in a responsible position of some sort.

Our default position will be to contact referees once we know candidates are to be selected for interview. But we appreciate this can be awkward for some candidates. If you only want your referees to be contacted if you have been successful at interview, and have been selected for the post, then please state this in your cv/resume, or covering letter – this will always be respected, and will have no adverse impact on your application.
